USS Arizona Memorial

The USS Arizona (BB-39) was commissioned for use by the US Navy on June 19th, 1915. It served in WWI as well as several years to follow. But it was the blows that it took on December 7th, 1941 that make the USS Arizona one of the most memorable vessels of the US Naval Fleet.

1,177 members of the 1,400 person crew were killed in the attack at Pearl Harbor and they along with what was left of the ship now rest at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Due to the shallow, clear waters where it lays at rest, the damaged USS Arizona can still today be seen clearly from above.

In 1958, President Eisenhower approved the creation of a memorial to stand overtop of the remains of the USS Arizona. Construction of the USS Arizona Memorial was completed on May 30th, 1962. Each year, one million visitors travel to Pearl Harbor to see the USS Arizona and pay tribute to the lives lost on December 7th, 1941.
